
Why Your Infrared Heaters Keep Shorting Out (And How to Stop It)
Ever notice how infrared heaters always seem to die at the exact same spot? The connection point. It’s a nightmare, especially in IPX4 environments where you’ve got water splashing around and extreme heat cranking up. When moisture sneaks into those connections, it’s a recipe for disaster. If the lead-wire sealing isn’t spot on, your wires are going to burn out or short circuit in a few months. Plain and simple.
The real reason seals fail
Most cheap heaters just use some basic glue or a loose gasket. Here’s the problem: quartz tubes and sealing resins don’t expand at the same rate when they get hot. As the heater turns on and off, that seal starts to crack. Tiny gaps open up. Then, a bit of water splashes in. Once that moisture hits a high-voltage lead while it’s scorching hot, you get carbonization. And that’s how you end up with a dead heater and a dangerous short.
Doing it the right way
We do things differently to keep that from happening. Instead of just “gluing” things together, we use high-temperature fluorosilicone or special epoxy resins that stay flexible even up to 250°C. It creates a mechanical bond that actually moves with the tube. So, when the unit vibrates or hits a thermal shock, the lead doesn’t just pull away and leave a hole. Since an IPX4 rating means the unit has to handle water spray from any direction, the transition from the ceramic insulator to the wire jacket has to be airtight. We obsess over the materials so there are no air gaps where condensation can pool and cause trouble.
A heads-up on the trade-off
There is one thing to keep in mind. Better sealing makes the lead wires a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend these wires into a sharp angle like you can with unsealed ones. If you do, you risk cracking the resin. You’ll want to plan your wiring layout carefully. Give the wires some room to breathe. If you kink the wire too close to the tube, you’ve basically just bypassed all that IPX4 protection. Keep it smooth, and the heater will last.
