
The Truth About IP65 Sealing in Infrared Heaters
If you think waterproofing a heater is as simple as slapping a plastic cover over it, you’re in for a surprise. The real battle happens where the wires actually meet the heating element. That’s the danger zone. In those IP65-rated units, if the seal isn’t perfect, moisture sneaks in and starts eating away at the metal. Then, once the heater cranks up the heat, that moisture speeds up the decay of the insulation. Before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit on your hands.
Why the cheap stuff breaks
Most budget heaters rely on basic silicone or some generic glue. The problem? They can’t handle the constant “yo-yo” of heating up and cooling down. When the heater hits its peak, the seal expands. When it cools, it shrinks. It’s basically breathing. And every time it “inhales,” it sucks moisture and grit right into the electrical connections. Not ideal. We do things differently. We use high-temp fluorinated polymers and gaskets that are molded to a precise fit. They grip the wire tight, no matter how wild the temperature swings get. This keeps the wire from shifting or rubbing against the housing, so you don’t end up with stripped insulation.

When the sealing is sloppy, the heat doesn’t just stay in the lamp—it starts traveling backward into the wiring. It literally cooks the insulation until it becomes brittle and cracks like an old wafer. Our goal is a total seal. By keeping the heat where it belongs and the moisture out, the electrical path stays stable. It doesn’t just work for a few weeks; it actually lasts.
One heads-up
Here’s the catch. Because we seal these units so tightly for your safety, they aren’t exactly “DIY friendly” if something goes wrong in the field. If you accidentally slice a wire during installation, you can’t just slap some electrical tape on a splice and call it a day. To keep that IP65 rating, you’ll have to replace the whole lead assembly.
