
Why we stopped building “sealed” heaters
Let’s be honest about outdoor heating. It’s a brutal environment. Between the rain, the dust, and the constant heating and cooling, things eventually break. Usually, when you buy an IP65-rated heater, you’re getting a waterproof fortress. Which sounds great—until something actually goes wrong. Then, trying to get inside that sealed box is a total nightmare. You’re fighting with gaskets, peeling back old sealant, and praying you don’t ruin the waterproof seal just to fix one small part. We got tired of that. So we changed how we build them.
The “Drop-In” Approach
Most heaters are built as one big, permanent assembly. If a tube burns out after five years, you’re often stuck ripping the whole unit out of the ceiling or wall. It’s a waste of time and money. We decided to go modular instead. Think of the heating element and its electrical housing as a single, replaceable cartridge. You don’t have to rewire the entire machine or spend an afternoon playing detective with a multimeter. You just swap the module.
Keeping the water out (without the headache)
Now, you can’t just leave a giant hole in a waterproof heater. That defeats the purpose of the IP65 rating. To make this work, we used precision access panels and industrial seals that actually hold up. Most seals are “one and done”—once you open them, they’re trash. Ours are designed to be opened and closed without losing that tight envelope. It turns a grueling afternoon of repairs into a few quick turns of a wrench. You pull the old tube, slide in a new one, and you’re done in minutes. Plus, we use standard connectors, so you aren’t hunting through your truck for a specific wire gauge while standing on a ladder.
The trade-off
Nothing is perfect. By moving to a modular setup, we added more connection points. That means you have to be careful. You’ve got to make sure everything is torqued down tight. If a connection is loose, you’ll get voltage drops or overheating. And if you don’t seat the module properly, water gets in, and your reflectors will start corroding. But here’s the thing: we’re okay with that. I’d much rather spend ten minutes double-checking a connection during a quick tube swap than spend a whole day replacing a massive outdoor fixture every few years. It just makes more sense.
