
The Hidden Weak Spot in Your Outdoor Heaters
If you’ve ever had an outdoor infrared heater die on you, it probably wasn’t the heating element that gave up first. It was the seal. Here’s the deal: these heaters live a hard life. They go from freezing cold to scorching hot, over and over. When you see “IP66” on a spec sheet, it sounds great—like the thing is a submarine. But while the outer shell might be waterproof, the spot where the wires actually enter the heater is usually the Achilles’ heel. Most cheap heaters just use some basic silicone or glue to plug that gap. Problem is, that stuff bakes. It gets brittle, cracks, and eventually shrinks. Once that happens, you’ve basically left the front door open for rain and humidity to wander right in. And as soon as water hits a high-voltage wire?**Pop.**Short circuit. Game over.
Why they actually fail
It comes down to how heat moves. Those infrared lamps get incredibly hot, and that heat travels right down the wires. If the sealant isn’t built for those temperature spikes, it starts to degrade. It pulls away from the wire, leaving a tiny gap. We call this “thermal shrinkage,” but you can just think of it as the seal giving up. This creates a vacuum effect. As the heater cools down, it actually sucks damp air inside. It’s like the heater is breathing in the very moisture that will eventually kill it.
Doing it the right way
We decided to stop relying on a single layer of glue. Instead, we use a multi-stage process. We use a high-temp ceramic potting compound and bond it with a moisture barrier. The big difference?**The ceramic doesn’t shrink.**Whether the heater is sitting at 0°C or cranking at 600°C, that grip on the wire stays tight. No gaps, no “breathing,” no surprises.
One quick warning for the install
There is a trade-off here. Because this seal is so solid, the point where the wire enters the heater is pretty rigid. Please, don’t bend those wires sharply right at the seal. If you force a tight kink in the cable, you could crack the ceramic. If that happens, you’ve basically cancelled out all that IP66 protection. Just give your wiring loom some slack. Give the wires room to breathe, and the seal will do its job for years.
