
Keeping Outdoor Heaters Alive in the Rain and Fog
If you’ve ever put a heater outside, you know the deal. Water and electricity are a nightmare together. Moisture doesn’t just cause shorts; it sneaks in, settles, and slowly kills your gear from the inside out. That’s why we obsessed over the IP65 rating.
Dealing with the Wet Stuff
Basically, IP65 means we’ve locked the housing down. Dust can’t get in, and if you hit it with a water jet from any angle, it won’t blink. We don’t just hope for the best—we use precision-molded gaskets and sealed cable entries to make sure water stays on the outside where it belongs. But rain isn’t the only problem. Mist and fog are actually sneakier. Think about a cold, damp morning. Your heater kicks on, then off. That temperature swing creates condensation inside the unit. If a tiny drop of water hits a scorching hot quartz tube?Crack. To stop that, we used anti-fogging coatings and sealed internal chambers. It keeps the tubes bone-dry, so you don’t have to worry about thermal shock ruining your day.
The Build Quality
We went with high-grade aluminum for the chassis. Why? Because it pulls heat away from the seals. If those gaskets get too hot, they warp. Once they warp, they leak. By keeping the housing cool, those seals stay tight and do their job. We also took a hard look at the wiring. You’ll find a lot of cheap plastics out there that turn brittle after one or two winters of freezing and thawing. We skipped those. We used high-temp outdoor wiring that actually lasts, so you aren’t replacing the unit every couple of seasons.
A Few Tips for Setup
These things can take a beating in a snowstorm, but they only work if you install them right. Here’s the thing: the IP65 protection only works if you use the cable glands we provide. If you decide to cut into the housing or use some random connectors you found in the garage, you’ve just opened the door for water to get in. One more thing to keep in mind. Because the housing is so tightly sealed, it traps more heat than an open-air heater. Just make sure you leave a little breathing room around the mounting surface. If the air can’t move, the internal thermostat might trip and shut things down way too early.
