If you’re picking out heaters for changing rooms or gym showers, you’ve probably realized that standard infrared lamps just don’t make the cut. You need something IP65-rated. In plain English? It means the thing is sealed tight against dust and can handle a direct blast of water without flinching. In a steamy locker room, that’s the difference between a warm guest and a blown fuse. You don’t want moisture creeping into the electrical terminals. That’s how you get shorts.
Why the heat feels different
These elements use short-wave infrared. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you, which takes forever. These are different. They send heat straight to the person, like a ray of sunlight. It’s instant. We wrap the tungsten filament in high-density quartz glass. It’s the secret to why these things hit their top temperature in a matter of seconds. One heads-up: keep an eye on your wattage. A high-wattage tube feels like a luxury spa, but it pulls a lot of power. If you’re swapping these into an old setup, double-check your wiring. If the wires are too thin, they’ll start overheating before the lamp even gets going.
The nitty-gritty on install
We put a special coating on the quartz. It pushes the light further into the infrared spectrum, which means less blinding glare and more deep, penetrating heat. For the connections, we stick with R7s or SK15 bases. They’re simple drop-in replacements. You just slide them into the socket, lock them in, and you’re done. No need to tear apart the whole housing just to do some basic maintenance. The tricky part is the IP65 seal. You need a perfect fit between the lamp head and the chassis. If that gasket gets pinched or starts to wear down, your waterproof protection is gone.
A few things to watch out for
Here’s the catch: quartz is brittle. These elements can handle extreme heat, but they hate being dropped or bumped. One tiny crack in the tube kills the vacuum seal, and the filament will burn out almost instantly. And a pro tip?Wear gloves. The oils from your skin can leave spots on the glass. When the lamp heats up, those spots create “hot points” that eat away at the glass and shorten the life of the lamp. Keep it clean, and it’ll last much longer.
