
Why we don’t mess around with ceramic end caps
Infrared emitters are basically heat monsters. They run on high voltage and get incredibly hot. To keep things from going sideways, we use ceramic end caps to separate the heating element from the lamp holder. If that insulation fails? You get an arc-over. That’s a fancy way of saying a spark jumps where it shouldn’t, which usually ends with a fried controller or a tripped breaker. Not a great way to start your morning.
The reason we test every single tube
Some shops just sample-test a few units and hope for the best. We don’t. Every single tube that leaves our floor goes through a full voltage withstand and insulation resistance check. We push the ceramic way past its normal operating voltage. Why? Because we’re hunting for the tiny stuff—microscopic cracks or impurities that you can’t see with the naked eye. Here’s the thing: a single pinhole in the ceramic can let current leak through. In a high-wattage setup, that leak creates a hot spot. Over time, that heat eats away at your housing. By stressing every unit first, we make sure the ceramic actually does its job when things get hot.
Getting the fit right
We use ceramic because it loves the heat. It stays solid at temperatures where metal would conduct electricity and plastic would just melt into a puddle. We also make sure these caps fit tight. No rattling, no shifting. When the material expands from the heat, you want it to stay put. But a heads-up: your wiring needs to be clean. Even the best ceramic caps can’t fight a thick layer of oil or dust. That grime creates its own path for electricity to travel, bypassing the insulation entirely. That’s how you end up with a premature failure.
The one catch: it’s brittle
Ceramic is a beast when it comes to heat—it can handle 1000°C without breaking a sweat. But it hates being dropped. It’s brittle. If your team is rough with the installation or forces a tube into a misaligned slot, the cap can crack. The second that happens, your safety margin disappears. Handle them with care. It’s a lot easier to be gentle during setup than it is to replace a blown-out system.
